It was in the 3rd century BCE that Kalinga flourished as a dominant kingdom under the Jaina king, Kharavela. Superb monastic caves at Udayagiri and Khandagiri were built under his influential rule. The well-known Lingaraja temple in Bhubaneshwar was started by Yayati Keshari III of Keshari dynasty and was accomplished by his son Lalatendu Keshari in the 10th century. Orissa came under the influence of the Mughals in the year 1576. The region was divided into two parts, Garjat and Mughalbandi by the Mughals. British East India Company occupied Orissa in the year 1803 after the Second Anglo-Maratha War. Orissa was a part of the Bengal Presidency under British rule until the year 1936, when Bihar and Orissa were divided into separate provinces. Orissa became a part state of the Union of India in the year 1950.
