Reaching Sikkim

Sikkim is a fascinating land of rich culture, heritage and unparalleled natural beauty. This erstwhile kingdom has carved a niche among the prominent tourist destinations of north eastern India. Characterized by rugged mountains, soaring peaks, lush valleys, meandering rivers and a cool climate, it is a natural paradise ideal for spending some days away from the din and rush of the plains. Sikkim also has a lot of historical importance; it is strewn with a number of Buddhist monasteries that endow a mystic appeal to the entire region. The things to watch here are simply endless and tourism has greatly flourished in this region. Due to the growing popularity, its transportation network has also been improved and now transportation and access to Sikkim has become very convenient.

Transportation and Access to Sikkim by Air
Sikkim does not have its own airport and the nearest airport is located in Bagdogra at a distance of 124 km from the capital city Gangtok. The airport offers air connections to the various towns of India such as Kolkata, Delhi, Patna, Imphal and Guwahati. Traveling to Sikkim by air is the fastest and most convenient way.

Transportation and Access to Sikkim by Rail
Due to a hilly terrain, Sikkim does not have any railway station of its own; however the nearest railhead is located in New Jalpaiguri from where you can get regularly scheduled trains for the important destinations like Delhi, Guwahati and Kolkata.

Transportation and Access to Sikkim by Road
Reaching Sikkim by road transport is the most popular and at times the only viable option. Traveling by road, you will get glimpses of rural northeastern India. Gangtok is well-linked by road network with the various important towns of east India such as Kolkata, Darjeeling, Guwahati and Patna. You can get uninterrupted bus services from Siliguri , Kalimpong, Darjeeling and other nearby places to the various destinations in Sikkim. Private taxis and tourist coaches can also be availed for reaching Sikkim.
