Adventure tourism in Sikkim

Adventure tourism in Sikkim involves a wide range of adrenaline rushing sports and activities. These include trekking, river rafting, kayaking, mountain climbing, and gliding. These adventure pursuits are very important for tourism in Sikkim as they attract a large number of tourists from all over the world to the state. The Sikkim tour packages cover the major tourist destinations as well as arrange for the adventure tours. A proper infrastructure to support this inflow further helps the growth of tourism. A wide variety of hotels in Sikkim provide accommodation to tourists. The chief components of adventure tourism in Sikkim are discussed below.

Trekking:
Tourists would be thrilled at the exciting climbing courses offered by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. The Kanchenjunga Trek takes about 15 days. It takes tourists on an invigorating journey in this virgin land among an amazing array of wildlife and greenery. Another exciting trip is a trek to Bakhim which offers travelers a unique view of the forest that is dazzling with various colors of the wild flowers including rhododendrons.

A breathtaking view of Kanchenjunga can be seen on a trek to Dzongri which is 3963 mts tall. At sunset or sunrise, the mountain tops become alive with various colors bouncing off the sunlight in a spectacular manner. Another noteworthy trip would be to take the Monastery Leisure Trek which usually lasts for 11 days. It is recommended that tourists plan on their trekking ventures between February to May and between October to December when weather conditions are moderate.

River Rafting:
River rafting is considered as the latest trend in the list of adventure sports in Sikkim. Adventure-loving tourists flock to Sikkim every year to participate in the rafting extravaganza in the Rangit and Teesta rivers. The latter has been graded with a point of 4 on the international grading scale for rafting. The Teesta River offers a comparatively smoother gradient with varying intensities of rapids and currents. It is reputed as one of the finest water rafting stretches in the country. On the other hand, the Rangit River is more challenging with turbulent waters, requiring experienced rafters to take the challenge. Rafters with lesser experience are advised to enjoy their share of water adventure sports on the Teesta River. Rafters are provided with the facility of overnight river beach camping. For any enquiry or assistance, they can contact the Department of Tourism directly.

Kayaking:
Kayaking adventures are available too for special groups. It is necessary that tourists have some prior experience in this sport. Kayaking is undertaken in the Teesta River which offers favorable condition for enjoying the rides on the waves. Sikkim Tourism offers a number of well maintained kayaks to people who are interested in this form of adventure sport.

Mountain Biking:
This activity is one of the latest entries in the list of adventure sports in Sikkim. Mountain biking is a must for travelers who come to Sikkim on adventure tourism trips. Roads are well maintained and deemed fit for this form of sport. In most parts of northern and western Sikkim, mountain biking is promoted significantly to lure more tourists to Sikkim from all over the world.

Gliding:
Gliding is yet another form of adventure sport which has gained immense popularity in recent times. Sikkim Tourism actively promotes this thrilling sport. This activity is more prevalent in Jorethang in west Sikkim and parts of north Sikkim.
