History

Gwalior Fort Madhya Pradesh has a rich history that takes us to the time when Ashoka, the great emperor of the Mauryan Empire used to rule the Malwa region. The Parmaras also used to rule here about 1,000 years ago in the southwestern region of Madhya Pradesh and among them the predominant ruler was Raja Bhoj. The city is said to have derived its name from him. His empire also extended upto Indore and Mandu. Later the Chandelas saw prominence in Madhya Pradesh and their love for art and creativity is apparent from the extraordinary series of temples at Khajuraho that were built in the northern part of the state. The Mandu region of Madhya Pradesh has witnessed continuous conflict between Hindu and Mughal rulers. Madhya Pradesh has also been the land of many gallant warriors, poets and musicians, saints and philosophers.

Several other dynasties have also ruled over Madhya Pradesh such as Sungas, Andhras, Satavahanas, Kshaptrapas, Nagas and the Guptas. Eventually, Madhya Pradesh came under the rule of the Britons and after independence it got the status of a full-fledged state on 1st November, 1956.
