Bahai is a relatively recent addition to the list of world religions. It is a monotheistic religion started in the 19th century by Bahaullah in Persia. The religion has been built upon the teachings of the existing religions of the world and comprises traditions and rituals found in many world religions. It is estimated that there are between 5 to 6 million Bahai supporters all around the globe.

The Bahai temple in New Delhi was opened to the general public in December 1986, and has won numerous awards for the innovative architecture. Construction was started in 1980. The design was inspired by the shape of a lotus, and clinically executed by an Iranian architect named Fariborz Sahba. 27 free standing petals give a distinctive look to the temple. The lotus signifies purity and reverence in Hinduism and Buddhism. The main construction materials used are concrete and white marble. The central hall of the temple can accommodate up to 2500 people. Nine doorways lead up to this hall which reaches a maximum height of 40 meters. The structure is surrounded by nine pools. At night when the temple is lit up, the reflection of it in these ponds presents a marvelous sight.
