Building materials were procured from the nearby sites and old monuments, and although a large number of magnificent new structures were built for official and residential purposes, the British allowed many major historical monuments to stand amidst the new city. Formal announcement of the shift of capital to New Delhi was made by King George V in the famous Delhi Durbar of 1911.
