Film City

Mumbai is called the city of dreams. Ever since cinema gained popularity and social acceptance in India, millions of people, especially the youth, have been dreaming of making a mark in the Indian film industry, which promises unimaginable riches and incredible popularity all over the country. Mumbai is the center of the Indian film industry and so all dreams lead to Mumbai. Most dreams remain unfulfilled, but that does not stop a new generation to go on dreaming. For the tourist who just wants to experience the nuances of film making and what goes on behind the scenes in the huge Indian film industry, the Film city is the ideal place to go. It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Mumbai, but you would need prior permission to visit this place.

Film city made a humble beginning in 1911, with the initiative taken by Dadasaheb Phalke, a pioneer personality in the Indian film industry. Since then Film City has come a long way, and seen many innovations over the years. With government help, and support from the major producers of the industry, Film City has stood the test of time and has survived the challenges posed by newer and better equipped studios in Mumbai and South India, notably the Ramoji Film City.

Film City is also called Bollywood, which has become one word describing the entire film industry of India. The vast campus is located in the Mumbai suburbs, next to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, neighboring the Aarey colony. The original plan was executed under the guidance of V Shantaram, one of stalwarts of Indian cinema. Today, a visitor will be amazed to see the giant scale of operations in the Film City. Huge and lavish sets, well equipped edit rooms, recording studios, and simulated locations from mountains to rivers keep the visitor mesmerized. As in the early days, the Film City continues to produce a large number of movies every year, contributing immensely to the multi million dollar Hindi film industry. More than 900 movies are churned out every year by the Indian film industry, and a large number of these are shot in Film city. Apart from movies, many television shows including the immensely popular show KBC (Indian version of who wants to be a millionaire?) have been shot here.

The location of Film City is vital as the natural surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for many action and dance sequences. Many documentaries have been made about the Film City. It is undoubtedly one of the major Mumbai tourist attractions. Along with other popular tourist spots of the city, Film city is also one of the highlights of tourism in Mumbai.
