Khajuraho is the ancient capital of the Chandela Rajputs, located in the Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a major tourist attraction of the state, and a famous temple town in Northern India. Khajuraho has primarily earned world wide acclamations for its temples and erotic sculptures.     The major tourist attractions in Khajuraho are the Western group of temples. The other groups are the Eastern and the Southern group of temples. The Western Group of temples at Khajuraho comprises the Chaunsat Yogini Temple, Chitragupta Temple, Kandariya Mahadeo, Matangeswara Temple, Vishwanath Temple, Lakhsmana Temple and the Varaha Temple. All these tenples are dedicated to various Hindu male and female deities. The largest among all these is the Kandariya Mahadeo temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the most revered Hindu Gods. The height of the temple goes up to 31 meters. While the northern steps of the temple have images of lions engraved on them, the southern steps have elephants carved out on them.

    The southern group of temples is also referred as the Jain group of temples. Most reputed among them is the Parsvanath Temple. The Eastern Group of Temples is situated on the bank of the river Khajur. The most notable temples in this group are the Vamana, Javari, Brahma and Hanuman Temples.

The National Park is just 25 kilometers away from Khajuraho and is spread across an area of 543 sq km.
