About Aurangabad

Aurangabad city is located on the Northern part of the state of the Indian state of Maharashtra. The city is situated 403 km from Mumbai and is surrounded by Hills on all sides. One of the best things about Aurangabad is the cave temples. There are many carved cave temples built by the Buddhists, Jains and Hindus over centuries in and around the city which also bears evidence to the effort made by the Maurya dynasty to spread the religion of Sakyamuni or Buddha. The temples built by the Satvahana and Rashtrakutas are also located here. The Ajanta caves constructed between 200 BC and 600 AD and the Ellora caves constructed in the 7th Century AD add extra charm the city. Some historians believe that the city was founded by Malik Amber, the Prime Minister of the Nizam of Ahmednagar, who was the them ruler of the Deccan. Initially the city was named Fatehpura, but it was probably during the reign of Aurangzeb that the city was named Aurangabad.
