Tourist information on Allahabad

Background: Be it the Vedas or the grand epics - the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, or the Puranas - as Prayag, mention of Allahabad is present in all. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma, the creator, chose a piece land on earth on which the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati would flow into a confluence. He addressed it as 'Tirtharaj' or the 'king of all pilgrimage centers.'

Allahabad's antiquity fascinated the inquisitive itinerants like the Chinese travelers Huen Tsang and Fa Hien, who visited it in the 5th and the 7th centuries respectively. With the passage of time, Allahabad found itself playing host to the royalty, including the glorious Harsha, Akbar, Dara Shikoh, Khusro, and Queen Victoria. In 1575, the city was named 'Illahabas' by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, who realized its strategic importance and went on to build an imposing fort on the banks of the holy Sangam.

Allahabad always remained on the forefront of national importance, especially during the days of freedom struggle of India. The checkered past of Allahabad with its religious, cultural and historical ethos also gave rise to several distinguished scholars, poets, writers, thinkers, and political leaders.

Best time to visit: The best time to visit Allahabad is between the months of November and February. Do not forget to pack in your cotton outfits if you are planning your trip to the city during summers. For the winters, woolens are apt.
