Must see place in Allahabad:

  • Sangam

    One of the most sacred places for the Hindus, it is this enshrined site that plays the host to the widely revered Kumbh Mela held every 12 years. The holiness ascribed to it comes from the fact that it marks the confluence of three holy rivers-Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati.

  • Allahabad Fort

    Located near Sangam, Allahabad Fort built in AD 1583 was a consequence of a diplomatically decision on Akbar. The cardinal location of the city necessitated a Fort to reinforce the army's stronghold over the area. Though now used by the Indian Army, portions of it are still open for viewing by the tourists. The tourists can also see Jodhabai Palace, present in the same compound.

  • Ashoka Pillar

    This 10.6 meters high sandstone pillar dating back to 232 B.C. has various decrees and Persian intaglio in scripted on it, monumentalizing the ascension of Emperor Jahangir to the throne.

  • Patalpuri Temple

    This underground temple located inside the Allahabad Fort, finds a mention in the scriptures as the place where Lord Rama worshipped once. Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang, who visited India in AD 644 also wrote about it in his travelogue.

    The famous Akshaya Vat or the 'Immortal Tree', one of the most revered trees in the Hindu mythology, is also located within the temple premises.

    Any visit to the Fort, Patalpuri Temple, Ashoka Pillar and AkshayaVat is subject to permission from Commandant, Ordinance Depot, Fort, Allahabad.

  • Anand Bhawan

    This ancestral home of the Nehrus houses various memorabilia, paintings, and photographs that allow a quick glance at the lifestyle of the political pioneers of the Nehru Gandhi family.

  • Swaraj Bhawan

    This former headquarters of the Congress Committee is the birthplace of Mrs. Indira Gandhi and currently houses the Jawaharlal Nehru Trust.

  • Khusrau Bagh

    This large garden is the resting place of Khusrau- son of Emperor Jahangir, his sister, and his Rajput mother.

  • Hanuman Mandir

    This temple, dedicated to the Hindu monkey-god Hanuman, is unique by virtue of the prostrate idol of the deity.

  • Allahabad Museum

    Located in the vicinity of Chandra Shekhar Azad Park, this museum has 18 galleries housing paintings of Nicholas Roerich, Rajasthani miniatures, terracotta figurines, coins and stone sculptures from the second century BC to modern times. The tourists can visit it at any time of the day from 10 a.m. to 5p.m. except on Mondays.
