The History
Civilization in Ladakh seems to have existed even in the Neo-lithic ages. The early kingdom was founded in 842 by Nyima-Gon. Later dynasties which ruled the kingdom, accepted Buddhism as their religion. In 1947, Ladakh was incorporated into Jammu and Kashmir but has been the scene of many invasions. It is now an active tourist spot and people get here from around the globe to participate in adventure tourism that the region offers.
How to get there?
Air:
Leh airport, soon to be known as Kushok Bakula Rimpoche airport, connects Leh and hence Ladakh to Delhi, Chandigarh, Srinagar and Jammu. It takes about 65 min for a flight to reach Leh from Delhi.
Rail:
To reach Leh, you could either take the rail route till Jammu and take the roadways through Srinagar or take the rail till Kalka and go up to Shimla and take the roadways through Manali.
Bus:
Buses run by State Transport Co-operation, mini coaches and taxis ply between Leh and other parts of the country, namely Srinagar, Leh and Kargil.
The Attraction
Adventure Tourism: Those with a streak of adventure and a taste for the thrill that the scraggy mountains of Ladakh have to offer come to the region time and again. Mountaineering expeditions, river rafting, jeep safari, camel safari, yak safari, mountain biking and trekking are some of the thrills this mountainous region has to offer.
Pilgrimage Retreat: Most of the locals in Ladakh are Buddhist. The entire region is spangled with a number of beautiful Gompas and monasteries. Here come the pilgrims, to worship, to find serenity and to chant with their prayer wheels.
Wildlife Tourism: Ladakh houses many mammals that have braved the conditions and made Ladakh their home. Some of these are the Yak, the Nyan, the Urial and the Bharal. Many tourists visit the region to observe the wildlife here.
