Leh
Leh is largest town in Ladakh. It is located at an altitude of 3600m above the sea level. The tourist attractions in the town are the nine-storey Namgyal Palace and Namgyal Tsemo (victory peak). Ladakh was opened to foreign tourists in 1974. Since then Leh remains the hub of tourist activity. It is also known as the Silk Route Trading Center and capital of Ladakh.
Kargil
234 Kms from Leh lies the township of Kargil which is also the headquarters of Kargil district. Karil was initially a tourist center as it lay on the route to China and Kashmir, snce the 1970s tourism has been taking precedence as the main activity.
Located on the bank of the Suru River, Kargil is at about 10,000 ft. altitude.
Zanskar
To the south west of Leh lies Zanskar, a valley which remains inaccessible most of the year. The valley lies between the Zanskar and Himalayan ranges and the only way out of the valley during winter months is the Chadar Trek, the walk on the frozen river of Zanskar. The valley lies at an altitude of 13,154 ft.
Monasteries: The Hemis Gompa is the largest monastery in Ladakh. The Shanti Stupa, Sankar Gompa, Namgyal Tsemo Gompa, Lamayuru Monastery and the Shey Monastery are other Tibetan monasteries worth visiting in the region.
Nubra Valley, Chang Thang and Dhahanu are other places of interest in Ladakh.
