Tourist Destinations in West Bengal

The state of West Bengal has numerous tourist attractions to offer to the tourists. These include places of historic important, religious spots, some incredible wildlife destinations and places offering breathtaking natural beauty. The tourist destinations in West Bengal should be visited in a systematic manner and the tour packages of West Bengal are the best for this purpose. The major tourist spots of the state are being discussed in short below.

Kolkata:
Exuding colonial association all over the city, Kolkata, called Calcutta till recently, is one of the four metropolitan cities of India. Till 1911, it served as the capital of British India, and still retains much of its colonial past in its numerous buildings and monuments built by the British. The city has a large number of tourist attractions including British structures like the Victoria memorial, government house, the Octorloney monument, and the town hall. Religious sites like the Kalighat temple, Jain temple, and Tipu Sultan mosque are equally attractive. The museums, art galleries, houses of famous people, and the old parts of the city are also worth a visit.

Sunderbans:
The southern part of the state makes up the worlds largest delta and is a unique ecological region having dense mangrove forests and a network of rivulets. This region has been declared a protected area as it is one of the last habitats of the Royal Bengal Tiger, a fascinating creature. The region also showcases a large number of flora and fauna species, including the estuarine crocodile, the almost extinct Gangetic Porpoise, spotted deer, Ridley Turtles and a large number of birds.

Digha:
Digha is the best known sea beach of West Bengal. Located besides the spectacular Arabian Sea, this beach retreat was developed by the British before Indian independence. It is one of the most popular beach resorts in eastern India. Sankarpur, Mandarmoni, and Junput are the other beach resorts of repute in West Bengal.

Shantiniketan, Bolpur:
This quaint little place is located near the Bolpur village in Birbhum district, about 3 hours from Kolkata by rail. Shantiniketan is famous all over the world for the Vishwabharati University established by the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the best poet India has produced. It is also a scenic place, having enchanting rivers and red soil typical of the region.

Bishnupur:
This small town in the Bankura district is known for its beautiful terracotta temples that showcase the Bengal style of temple architecture during the ancient and medieval times.

Malda, Murshidabad, Gaur, Bakreswar, Tarakeshwar, Belur math, Kamarpukur, and Diamond harbor are some of the well known tourist spots in West Bengal. Tourists should plan their tour of West Bengal during the Durga Puja which is the main festival of the state. It involves worship of the Goddess Durga who triumphs over evil personified by a demon. The seven day festival is one of the most fascinating festivals of India.
