Parliament House

The parliament house in New Delhi is one of the most important buildings in India. Along with the Presidents house, and the secretariat building, the Parliament House forms the core of Indian government. It is also a major tourist attraction of the city. Thousands of tourists stop by and have a look at the magnificent structure located at the heart of New Delhis most prominent area, which houses the most important buildings of the country. All reputed New Delhi tours make it a point to arrange for trips to the Parliament House.

The Parliament House in New Delhi is the house where the legislature of the country conducts its affairs. It is here, in the central hall, that Indian independence was proclaimed by the famous tryst with destiny speech delivered by the first prime minister of India, Mr. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Since then the parliament house in New Delhi has witnessed many defining moments of Indian history. Many historic bills have been passed in the two houses of the Indian legislature within the premises of the Parliament House.

The building was designed by Herbert Baker, a prominent architect of early 19th century. The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Connaught on 12th February 1921. The single storey building is circular in shape and stands 75 feet tall. The diameter measures 570 feet. Construction was completed in 1927, and the building was inaugurated by Lord and Lady Irwin. The structure accommodates three semi circular structures. These house the upper and lower houses of the parliament and the library. The chambers are attached to each other by interconnecting galleries. The magnificent building gets its distinctive look from the circular shape, and the 144 pillars of the circular corridor surrounding the three chambers.

The grand building is located at the end of parliament street North West of the Vijay Chowk. The secretariat buildings stand adjacent to the Parliament House. Probably the most important building in the country, the Parliament House is also a major attraction of tourism in New Delhi. Tourists can visit the Parliament House when the two houses are in session, subject to prior permission obtained from relevant authorities. Apart from watching the peoples representatives in action, the interiors of the Parliament House are also worth having a look. The walls of this historic building are adorned by paintings and portraits of the eminent personalities who shaped the destiny of India.

The Parliament House in New Delhi is located near the other famous landmarks of the city, including India gate, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the Secretariat. Tourists can reach this place quite easily by availing of buses, taxis and the metro. The nearest metro station is the Central Secretariat station.
