Nizamuddin's Tomb

The tomb of the most famous Sufi saint of Delhi, Nizamuddin Aulia is one of the major tourist attractions in New Delhi. Nizamuddins Tomb is also considered among the famous tombs in New Delhi, and attracts a sizeable tourist inflow almost everyday. The tomb is a revered place and people belonging to all communities visit it to soak in the pious ambience of the dargah.

The famous saint was born in Badaun in Uttar Pradesh in early 13th century. He renounced all worldly possessions and accepted a welcoming stance towards all religions, something that had an impact during the rules of many Muslim rulers who were his followers. The most notable among his followers were Alauddin Khilji, Mohammed bin Tughlaq and Amir Khusrau, the great poet. His prophecies used to turn out to be true and there are many stories that attempt to prove this.

The saint died in early 14th century. His original tomb is lost. The present structure known as Nizamuddins Tomb was built much later by a noble. It was repaired by Firuz Shah Tughlaq and subsequent rulers of Delhi, as it had already become a greatly revered place. It is said that the processions of all the emperors who ruled from Delhi, including the mighty Mughuls, used to stop here. No emperor would ever leave Delhi without praying at this dargah (tomb). The initial structure must have been very simple as most of the ornamental parts of the tomb complex are later additions by the subsequent kings ruling from Delhi.

The plan of Nizamuddins Tomb in New Delhi is quite similar to the other famous Dargahs of India. A courtyard surrounds the tomb which is where the devotees gather during mass prayers. Here one can find singers singing traditional Sufi songs in memory of the saint. The tomb is located in a square chamber surrounded by well maintained lawns. The roof of the chamber is topped by an ornate dome, said to have been built by Akbar II. The dome is decorated by black marble stripes with a crescent topping it.

A mosque has been built right next to the tomb, and the tombs of many well known personalities are located close to the dargah. These include the tombs of Jahanara, daughter of Shahjahan, and Abu-al-Fazl, Akbars chronicler. The tomb of Amir Khusrau is located within Nizamuddins tomb.

The major occasions during which the tomb should be visited include the birth and death anniversaries of Hazrat Nizamuddin, and Amir Khusrau. The spot can be easily visited from any part of the city. The neighboring area has been named Nizamuddin and there is a railway station named after the famous saint located nearby.
