Mirza Ghalib's Tomb

Mirza Asadullah Begh Khan, better known as Mirza Ghalib, was one of the most famous personalities in Old Delhi in the mid-19th century. He adorned the court of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughul Emperor. He wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian, some of which continue to be used even today in theatres, films, and television programmes. He is one of the very few intellectuals who survived the British assault after the fall of Delhi in 1857. Mirza Ghalibs tomb is an important place for those aware of the literary history of Delhi.

Ghalib has received more accolades after his death than when he was alive, often being sidelined by the emperor in favor of Zauq who was the court poet. He was appointed court poet only after the death of Zauq in 1854, during the last few years of the Mughul Empire. His work has gained popularity in the modern times, having inspired a lot of works based on them. His tomb holds reverence for the admirers of his verses. The simple tomb can be considered among the most important tombs in New Delhi due to the importance of Ghalib as one of the best known literary figures of his time. His diaries offer excellent account of the days before, during, and after the siege of Delhi.

The academy was established by the government during the death centenary of Ghalib to promote Urdu literature and has an impressive collection of Urdu literary works.
