Memorials in Delhi

New Delhi has always been the hot bed of Indian politics. Long before the British arrived in the country, this region had seen the rise and fall of several mighty dynasties that have left their mark at various places in the city. Delhi has also seen the rise of several important leaders during the Indian independence movement. After Independence, the nation has mourned the demise of the loved prime ministers and leaders of the country, including the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, in 1948. The memorials in New Delhi built in the memory of these exceptional men and women are among the highlights of tourism in New Delhi. The New Delhi tours must cover these places, as they are as much about the history of the country as the forts and palaces.

The New Delhi memorials include the following

Raj Ghat, Gandhi memorial
The father of the nation was assassinated on 30th January 1948. The nation mourned the loss of one of its greatest sons, as his last rites were performed at this spot on the banks of the Yamuna River. His famous last words, hey Ram are inscribed on the memorial. The place is surrounded by a beautiful lawn. Gandhijis favorite devotional songs are played here adding to the pious ambience. Rajghat is visited by many foreign dignitaries on their visit to India. On 2nd October, the Mahatmas birthday, and on 30th January, all the important leaders of the country, including the prime minister and the president, visit Rajghat and pay homage to the Mahatma.

Shanti Van, Nehru memorial
The first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, passed away on 27th may 1964, after leading the country into the modern age. His last rites were performed here which is now a popular tourist spot in the city. Located on the banks of the Yamuna, Shanti van is a peaceful place. The lawns surrounding the memorial give the place a serene look. State and foreign dignitaries visit this memorial during the birth and death anniversary of one of the most famous politicians of India.

Vijay Ghat, Lal Bahadur Shastri memorial
The third prime minister of India, the amiable and universally loved Lal Bahadur Shastri, was cremated here in the year 1966. His memorial is a reminder to the modern generation of the achievements and contributions of this illustrious man.

Shakti Sthal, Indira Gandhi memorial
The first woman to be the prime minister of the country, Indira Gandhi was a charismatic personality, and had a tremendous following all over the country. She was assassinated in 1984, and her memorial was built at this spot, later named Shakti sthal, meaning place of power, signifying the immense inner strength that Indira Gandhi possessed. Along with the above mentioned memorials, the Shakti Sthal is also one of the best known memorials in New Delhi.

TVir Bhumi, Rajiv Gandhi memorial
The young and charismatic Rajiv Gandhi had been a great influence on the country after taking over as prime minister after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi. He led India towards the modern era of technological advancement and enjoyed wide support all over India. Unfortunately, his assassination in 1991 brought a premature end to his life. His cremation was performed here in the presence of a large number of dignitaries from all over the world. Vir Bhumi is a sad reminder of his untimely death, and one of the most important memorials in New Delhi.

The memorials in New Delhi as memorials all over the country are apt reminders of the sacrifices and achievements of the leaders of our country. They inspire the future generation to be of similar use to the country and its people.
