Humayun's Tomb

Delhi has many historical monuments located within its territory. The various dynasties that ruled from Delhi have left their mark on this city in the form of the forts, palaces, gardens, mosques and tombs that they built. Humayuns tomb is among the most famous and attractive tourist spots in New Delhi.

Humayun was the son of Babur who founded the mighty Mughul Empire in India. The most famous of the Mughuls, Emperor Akbar, was Humayuns son. Humayun cannot be said to a successful mughul, as he continuously lost his position as the monarch of India, regaining it twice. He had to spend many years on the run, having been driven off by the other claimants to Indias throne at that time. The Suris were the most prominent of these. Humayun, however, regained his place with help from Persia, and could have consolidated his position, had he not met with a fatal accident in his fort in Delhi. His premature death led to a renewed struggle for Delhi and the riches of India that ultimately led to the rise of his son, Akbar.

Humayuns tomb in New Delhi was built under the orders of Humayuns wife, Hamida Bano Begum, though some accounts attribute it to another wife of Humayun. The architecture of this tomb, built in the charbagh garden style, is very interesting. It is a blend of Persian and indo-Islamic styles, and it is the first tomb of this type in India built by the Mughuls. The culmination of this style of tomb architecture can be seen in the Taj Mahal, the greatest Mughul monument ever.

Humayuns tomb is located in the Nizamuddin area of New Delhi. The entrance to the tomb is through a magnificent doorway, similar to that in the Taj complex. The gardens surrounding the massive structure have been divided into 36 sections, interspersed by water channels and pathways. The gardens are well maintained even today and offer a nice place to relax after a tour of the mausoleum. The octagonal chamber of the tomb contains the cenotaph of Humayun. Red sandstone is the chief material used in the building while black and white marble have been used for the carvings and decorations. The high archways and double domes along with intricate lattice work in the windows make their debut here. They can be found in many of the subsequent Mughul buildings, including the Taj Mahal.

The complex, which also houses some other tombs, is a protected monument and has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. This beautiful Mughul tomb is one of the best known aspects of tourism in New Delhi. This is quite evident from the large number of tourists that visits this site every single day all through the year. The tomb is located along the Mathura road, on the banks of River Yamuna. One can get a fine view of the tomb from the Old Fort.
