Victoria Terminus

Although it has been renamed as Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus quite some time back, this majestic building housing the most important railway station of Western and Central India, and the headquarters of Central Railways, is one of the most enduring structures of Mumbai. Mumbai has undergone many changes during the last century, and Victoria Terminus, as it was previously known as, has witnessed most of them. Along with famous monuments like the gateway of India and the Prince of Wales Museum, VT, as the building is popularly known as, is also one of the major tourist attractions in Mumbai.

Designed by Frederick William Stevens in 1888, the Victoria Terminus was a spectacular addition to the city and must have caused passers by to marvel at the grandeur of its architecture. Even today, tourists can be seen gazing and photographing the colossal structure with amazement. The cost of construction in those days was a whopping Rupees16.14 lakhs, an incredible amount in those days. The building was completed in ten years and named after the reigning queen of England.

Victorian Gothic style has been followed in the architecture of the structure with traditional Indian elements incorporated at various places. Intricate wood carving, use of ornate tiles, brass railings and beautiful lamp posts make this giant railway station a great work of art. The world heritage committee of UNESCO declared the building as a world heritage site in 2004.

Victoria Terminus was named Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus in 1996. It is counted as one of the busiest railway stations of the country, chiefly due to the large number of local trains that ply to and from here. The station authorities have also made commendable efforts to include modern facilities in the complex, like automated coin and ticket vending machines.

Several well known tourist spots in Mumbai are located near the Victoria Terminus. Taxis and buses are available from the station to various parts of the city. Gateway of India, Prince of Wales museum, Jahangeer art gallery, and Marine drive are some of highlights of tourism in Mumbai, and these places can be visited easily from the Victoria Terminus.
