Varkala - What Makes it Tick:
Relatively lesser traveled than the other destinations in Kerala, Varkala offers its visitors some cherished moments of peace and tranquility, far from the maddening crowds. The place is known for its beaches with high cliffs and mineral springs. Also, the site is popular as a Hindu pilgrimage spot as well. The various tourist attractions in Varkala are discussed below:

Papanasam Beach:
Varkala beach is the best site along the coast of Kerala for viewing the glory of sunset. Lofty cliffs that tower tall border the beach. Highly odd land formations and the view from the top are greatly enchanting for the visitors. Glistening white sands, clear blue skies reflecting on the clear waters, the red soil of the hilltop along with green and yellow tinted paddy fields, and lush green tall coconut trees project a picture of awesome beauty and splendor. You will actually have to either cross over rocks during high tide or descend down the cliff. A path has been created due to constant use. However, the state government has plans for the development for its inland waterways.

Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple:
Varkala is also considered as a leading pilgrim centre in Kerala. The 800-year old Janardhana Temple devoted to Ayyappan and Hanuman, is located on top to the hill. It is actually the ultimate resting-place of the great social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the inner chamber but can move around the temple.
