History of Quilon:
Quilon is an ancient seaport town located on the Arabian coast and an important trade center of Kerala. It is located along the banks the Ashtamudi Lake. The city has been frequently changing its name and has been called Desinganadu, Kollam, and Quilon at various points of time. It enjoys persistent commercial reputation from the early days of Phoenicians and the Romans.
Ibn Batuta acknowledged it as one of the five ports he saw during the span of 24 years while he traveled to India. The monarchs of Quilon and China had political relations in the 14th century and they swapped embassies with each other. In fact, there was a prosperous Chinese settlement at Quilon at that time. Great Venetian explorer Marco Polo traveled to this city in 1275 as a Chinese mandarin. From the start of 16th century, the Portuguese, Dutch, and British started invading the country in quick succession to set up trading centers at Quilon. The British positioned a garrison at Quilon in view of a agreement between Travancore and British in the 18th century.
