Camel Safari

Adventure activities come in various shapes and sizes. Travelers, for whom a touch of thrill and excitement is an essential ingredient of a fulfilling tour, can opt for a camel safari. A camel safari in India will mostly concentrate on the state of Rajasthan on the north western part of the nation. A ride on a camel is something that is a lure for many an enthusiastic traveler.

A Rajasthan camel safari on the Thar Desert as a part of the holiday packages mainly includes travel tours to Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Mandawa. Start your journey from Delhi where you can visit various tourist places like Qutab Minar, Humayun Tomb, India gate, Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Gandhi memorial, Presidents House, and the Laxmi Narayan temple.

A few hours drive from Delhi to Mandawa will take you to the town of old havelis decorated with colorful frescoes that are must visits before you start off for the camel tour. A camel ride of 6 hours through 18 km from Mandawa will take you to the hamlet of Dhakas which is located in the middle of the Thar, offering ample opportunity for exploring the nearby villages. A further six hours ride from Dhakas will take you to the hamlet of Khotia where after a brief stay you can come back to Mandawa.

A 4 hour drive from Mandawa will let you into the town of Bikaner, 160 km away. Having paid visits to the Junagarh Fort and Lalgarh Palace, you start for the camel safari that will take you southwards, through the hamlets of Naukh, Baru, Kansar, Sataya, Chayan, and Tadana to Mohangarh which, though a rather small town, houses an impressive sandstone fortress which calls for a visit. From this town, the path continues to Dungri and subsequently onto Jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer, situated in the western tip of the country, is essentially a town of medieval architecture, cobbled streets, and most imposingly, the desert. From here a camel safari of a few hours will take you to Badabagh, where the mausoleums of the Bhatti Rajput kings (former rulers of Jaisalmer) are worth visiting. Adjoining Badabagh is the village of Baisakhai, which is home to an interesting old Hindu temple. After a brief halt over here you can take a ride to Ramkunda that is famous both for its landscape and its Hindu temples. Most camel safaris stop over for the night at Ramkunda and resume the journey the next day to the village of Roopsi which is home to the quaint antiquated houses.

Moving on from Roopsi, the camel safari travels to the village ofLudharva, which has a Jain temple as the main tourist attraction. Next you travel to Chatrayil, a typical Muslim village and a fine place to stay the night over before continuing the following day to the Rajput village of Salkha, which, in turn, lies close to the sand dunes of Beri of Kanoi. The traditional Rajasthani wells, the village belles, in colorful lehengas in Beri of Kanoi will make for great snaps. The stunning wooden art pieces are the main attractions of the Kanoi village of carpenter.

The camel safari gradually proceeds to Masooradi village from Kanoi, and then towards the oasis of Jeseiri. After refreshing themselves at Jeseiri the camels advance towards the Rajput village of Dedha followed by Deegasar, a beautiful lakeside village. After Deegasar, you move on to the village of Kuldhara and then back to Jaisalmer, through the hamlets of Moolsagar and Amarsagar en route.

Apart from this camel safari route in Jaisalmer, you can opt for another option that takes you through Jaisalmer, Moolsagar, Kuldhara, Masooradi, Padiyari, Moondardi, and back to Jaisalmer, thus offering a shorter version of a camel safari.

While returning to Delhi, you will not regret a stopover at Jaipur and Jodhpur. While Jodhpur offers tourist attractions like Clock tower, Mehrangarh fort, Jaswanthada, the city of Jaipur is home to sites like Hawamahal, Royal observatory, City palace, Johari Bazaar.
