The History
The existence of Goa can be known as far back as the Vedic period (1000-500 BC). Myths and legends about its origin are known from ancient texts such as the Mahabharata and Skanda Purana. Known by many names Goa, Gove, Gomantak and Gowapura, this fertile land was part of King Asoka's empire. Later on, it was governed by Sultan Yusuf Adil Shah Khan, ruler of Bijapur. By the end of the 16th century, the Portuguese had established settlement in Goa overthrowing the Muslim ruler. So Goa continued under the colonial rule of Portugal till 1961, when it was liberated by India and merged with it. In 1987, Goa was declared the 25th state of India.
