Punakha is the most fertile valley in Bhutan, fed by the Pho-cchu and Mo-chu rivers. It used to be the capital of the kingdom till 1955, and serves as the winter seat of the Je Khenpo and the central monk body.

The Wangli dzong in Wangdiphodrang is a fortress located towards the south of Punakha at an altitude of 1350 meters. The dzong, or fortress, has the distinctive architectural features similar to all the fortresses found in Bhutan, like the upward sloping walls and ornamental decorations. The rare black necked cranes can be seen in Phubjikha valley in Wangdiphodrang during the winter. The Tashigang is in the far east of Bhutan on the bank of the Gamri river. It is the country�s largest district and the 17th century dzong at Tashigang serves as the seat of the district administration.

The other places to visit in Bhutan include Tongsa, Bumthang valley, and Mongar. The forests are also among the most famous tourist destinations in Bhutan. Rhododendrons, junipers, rare orchids and the blue poppy which is the national flower, are some of the most beautiful plants found here. The major animals and birds inhabiting these forests include the golden langur, red panda, black necked crane, snow leopard, takin, Himalayan brown bear, hornbills, pheasants, and mountain goats. The villages are also counted among the important tourism destinations in Bhutan as they often host colorful festivals and fairs that are an integral part of tourism in Bhutan.
